Meet the Washington New Americans Team

Our Naturalization Services team is responsible for hosting the WNA citizenship workshops in Washington state, as well as providing legal training to local organizations, attorneys, and DOJ representatives. Our team also manages state and nationwide partnership relationships, leads cohorts, and oversees our own subgrantee program. Additionally, the WNA team handles ambassador and volunteer recruitment and development, along with other initiatives supporting our mission to serve and empower immigrant communities.

David Peña

Pronouns: He/him/his/el

David joined Washington New Americans in 2023, focusing on ensuring high-quality naturalization services in collaboration with our partners. He also supports the program’s financial operations. Additionally, David actively contributes to and supports citizenship workshops.

Originally from Venezuela, David later became an immigrant, living in three different countries before recently settling in the U.S.. Drawing from his personal challenges navigating various immigration systems and professional expertise in fields like education and hospitality, he strives to create an inclusive and accessible space for those in the immigrant community who seek help or wish to assist others.

As a language educator, David has had the privilege of working with individuals from over 15 different countries across every continent. He takes pride in the global perspective he has acquired through this invaluable experience.

During his leisure time, David enjoys hiking, traveling, spending quality time with his family, and indulging in the company of his cat.

Civic Engagement Associate and Organizer

Gabriela Rodriguez

Gaby Joined Washington New Americans in February of 2023 as a WNA Ambassador before becoming a full time Civic Engagement Associate and Organizer in February of 2024. She now runs the ambassador program and strives to organize our newly naturalized citizens in order to uplift their voices and build immigrant power. Her dream is to see all of our immigrant communities unite and realize that together we can influence our government to make positive changes for all.

As a Mexican immigrant and a mother of 3 kids, Gaby has a passion for her heritage and culture and wants to see the younger generation embrace their community’s uniqueness without fear. Her desire to see immigrants thrive is what keeps her dedicated and motivated.

In her time at OneAmerica, Gaby has led our community leaders to lobby at our state capitol alongside OneAmerica to demand support for things like dual language implementation in our state. She has also provided logistical support for all of our WNA citizenship clinics and has grown the ambassador program from 4 to 10 new members in a widespread geographical reach.

In her free time, Gaby enjoys watching her kid’s soccer tournaments, traveling, dancing and cooking.

Bonnie Stern Wasser

Pronouns: She/her/hers

Bonnie is has been an immigration attorney for many years in California and Washington State. She has a B.A. in Social Ecology from UC Irvine, a master’s in Architecture and Urban Planning from UCLA, and a J.D. from Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles. Bonnie began her legal career as an INS Trial Attorney in Los Angeles before joining a national immigration law firm and later opening her own immigration practice. After moving to Seattle, Bonnie worked for MacDonald, Hoague, and Bayless and then returned to private practice, where she practiced business and family immigration, asylum, DACA, and citizenship. In 2008, Bonnie helped establish the partnership between OneAmerica and the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Washington Chapter (AILA-WA). She has volunteered at Citizenship Days and clinics for 10 years, and served as Chapter Chair of AILA-WA for two years.

At OneAmerica, Bonnie provides technical assistance and training for legal volunteers at our citizenship workshops, and case consultation assistance for WNA’s grantee organizations. Bonnie also serves as a legal resource and advocate on immigration law and policy for the wider OneAmerica family and community. In her spare time, Bonnie enjoys photography and playing bluegrass fiddle.
